The symposium on "Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care" was held at our faculty within the scope of 12-18 May Nursing Week.
As part of the 12-18 May World Nursing Week celebrations, a symposium was held by our Faculty's Nursing Department on 13 May 2024.
The opening speech of the program, which started with a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem, was made by Bartın University Vice Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sevim ÇELİK. ÇELİK said that stating that the professionalization of nursing started with Florence Nightingale and that May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday, is celebrated as Nurses Day, and the 2024 theme of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) is “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care”, she pointed out the importance of the strategic investment in nursing in 2024 that can provide significant economic and social benefits.
Following the opening speech of Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sevim ÇELİK, Vice Head of the Department of Nursing Asst. Prof. Dr. Burcu KÜÇÜKKAYA, emphasized in her speech the increasing importance of undergraduate nursing education and quality in health, patient and employee satisfaction, qualified workforce, and improving the working conditions of nurses.
In the first session chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlknur Dolu and undergraduate student Merve Özoğlu, Prof. Dr. Naile BİLGİLİ, a faculty member of the Public Health Nursing Department at Gazi University Nursing Faculty, presented on "Intercultural and Global Nursing Care." In her presentation, she discussed the importance of a holistic and humanistic approach to nursing care and its contributions to healthcare services, as well as the challenges that nurses face in intercultural care and the importance of nurse competency in overcoming these challenges.
Prof. Dr. Sergül DUYGULU, the Head of the Nursing Management Department at Hacettepe University Nursing Faculty, presented "Economic Power in Nursing Care," providing information based on scientific studies. She emphasized that expenditures on quality, safe care, and healthcare decrease while employment and patient-employee satisfaction increase. Discussing solutions to economic challenges in care, DUYGULU stated that investing in nursing is an investment in society as a whole.
Nurse Mualla ALAÇAM, the Infection Control Unit Responsible Nurse at Bartın Provincial Health Directorate, presented on "Cost-Effectiveness of Nursing Care in Healthcare Service Providers", emphasizing the roles of nurses and sharing activities carried out in Turkey to protect public health.
BARU students' perspective on 'nursing'
The second session of the ICN, from the student's point of view, was chaired by Asst. Prof. Dr. Burcu KÜÇÜKKAYA and nursing master's student Arif CEYLAN.
Hakan DAŞKIRAN, the Student Representative of the Turkish Nurses Association and a nursing student at BARU, emphasized the responsibilities of student nurses regarding "The Contributions of Nurses to Health Economics and the Responsibilities of Nursing Students", stating that students will contribute to health economics by using their knowledge, skills, and experiences.
Nursing master's student İlayda YILDIRIM presented "The Impact of Specialization in Nursing on Care from All Aspects", highlighting the importance of nursing specialization areas and their contributions to the economic power of care.
A video titled "Future Nursing Awareness Representation" was shown at the symposium, where students shared their desires and dreams regarding the nursing profession.
The program followed with great interest, included a music performance that provided enjoyable moments for the participants. The symposium, which also included a question and answer session, concluded after taking commemorative photos to remember the day.
